I was born on the island of Java, one of the 17,000 islands spread across the Equator. I left the land of my birth when I was 19 to pursue higher education in the US. I decided to join the US Army a couple of years later. During my deployment to Iraq, I realized how fragile and precious life is.

I knew then that only with understanding and respect of cultural differences can we achieve a harmonious world. I would like to show you first hand that it is possible for the vast differences in cultures, traditions, languages, and ethnicity to become one. The country motto "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" (Unity in Diversity) sums this up.
