North Sumatra
Wave Riders North Sumatra & Nias Island
About This Tour
North Sumatra is home to some of the most dramatic landscapes and fascinating cultures in all of Indonesia. This 14-day adventure takes you from the food capital of Medan to the ancient volcanic lake of Toba, and on to the legendary surf island of Nias.
What Makes This Tour Special
Lake Toba is unlike anything else on Earth — a massive caldera lake so large that it contains its own island (Samosir), which itself is larger than Singapore. The Batak people who live around the lake have a rich and distinctive culture quite different from the rest of Indonesia.
Nias Island is a world-class surfing destination, but it’s also home to one of Indonesia’s most remarkable warrior cultures. The traditional stone-jumping ceremony is a breathtaking spectacle of athletic prowess that has no equivalent anywhere in the world.
Who Is This Tour For?
This tour is great for adventure seekers, surfers, and anyone who wants to experience Indonesia’s wild, less-traveled interior. Surfing at Nias is world-class but optional — there’s plenty to see and do on land. The drive to Lake Toba involves winding mountain roads, so a sense of adventure is helpful.
